Relaxation, TO-style: Slow things down this holiday season

Dec 9, 2019 4:30:00 PM / by Audi Midtown

Sure, the holidays are a time for family, annual traditions, and wintertime fun — but they can also get a little hectic. It’s important to take a moment to relax, and enjoy some much-needed down time. Fortunately, Toronto has plenty of low-key activities where you can unwind and decompress after the hustle and bustle of the holiday has subsided.

It’s easy to forget that the Toronto Zoo is open year round, but after one trip to experience Terra Lumina, you’ll definitely make it a top-priority winter destination going forward. The 1.5-km illuminated trail is simply breathtaking, and features video projections, multi-coloured lights, and musical accompaniments as you leisurely stroll through the various zoo sites.

The holiday break also means extra time with the kids around. Why not enroll them in a winter break camp for a couple of days? They get an outlet for their boundless energy, and you get a few more precious hours of peace and quiet. Now that’s what we call a win-win situation!

For some Nutcracker-themed fun, you can take them to Casa Loma (which really leans into that theme during the holidays), or watch Canada's Ballet Jörgen’s interpretation of the classic story.

What about the big screen? Opening Christmas Day, the animated movie Spies In Disguise stars the voices of Will Smith and Tom Holland — and features the RSQ e-tron, Audi’s first entirely virtual concept car.

Also, just because it’s not summer doesn’t mean you haven’t earned a little vacation. Toronto.com has some great options for romantic winter getaways just outside the city, where you can spend some much-needed quality time with that special someone.

Speaking of hibernation, the Paradise Theatre at Bloor and Dovercourt is finally out of its 13-year slumber. The heritage-designated art deco and art moderne theatre has returned with a full lineup of three to four monthly films, plus a smattering of events in between screenings. We suggest stopping by to enjoy the ambience of a classic theatre.

Another great way to relax and warm your heart during the cold winter months? Chowing down on molten cheese. That’s right, fondue is so hot right now, and there are plenty of options in Toronto to get super cheesy. We recommend Carens Rosedale — it’s one of their specialties.

The holiday break is never as long as we’d like it to be, so make sure you take the time to slow things down and savour the slower pace.
